• Another from the Apple Store in Covent Garden, London - there are so many opportunities for nice shots, but I have to admit that the staircases are the sweet spots for me.

  I originally wasn't getting the colours I wanted with this so I made a black and white version. Nice as that was, I wasn't convinced it suited it as it's quite a busy image but not in the way that I feel suits B&W. I wanted the individual elements (the boy, the girl waiting for him, the steps, the handrail, the man in the background) to all be distinct. I left it in B&W and moved on to what will be tomorrow's post, which had all the elements of a good B&W - simple, geometric framing, lots of contrast but without distracting from the main elements - but I tried colour first and came up with a really nice look.

  Then I had the brainwave of swapping the B&W processing and the colour processing with each other (I save the PSD files on all the images I process for here) and with a few tweaks ended up with a great colour version of todays image, and a good B&W one for tomorrow. But... I still prefer the colour ones of both so it's the colour version tomorrow. I'll post both the B&W images in a blog post.

  This is mainly a cross-processing curve sitting on top of a reduced opacity B&W layer, with extra contrast applied with another curve, and a vignette. There's some masking of the various layers where the shadows get too much, particularly on the boy.
